Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

    Messages from Society in general:

    Teachers make no money.

  • How I responded:

You may never become rich as a teacher, but you will be happy as long as you are doing something that you love. I never gave up no matter how difficult managing all of my responsibilities became. I kept a college plan in my bag at all times in order to remind myself how far I've come and how close I am to success.

Experiences and challenges that shaped me

  • I was the first female in my family to graduate high school. Continuing my education was challenging, but I am proof that it is possible.

  • I was raised by my grandparents, so finances were tight and financing college was impossible without financial aid and multiple jobs. But, I made it work.

  • My neighborhood was a difficult one to live in. The majority of the kids my age in the neighborhood did not go on to obtain a degree or even attempt college.
