Life & Career Milestones

I've taken a lot of twists and turns

  • 1.

I had a fifth-grade teacher who really supported and encouraged me—it’s because of her that I feel as if I’m paying it forward as a teacher now.

  • 2.

After graduating with my bachelor’s degree, I started a family and was a stay-at-home mom.

  • 3.

One of the other moms at my children's school encouraged me to look into an open teaching position at the school.

  • 4.

I started off teaching Spanish for elementary school students, then moved into teaching music, and eventually became the middle school Spanish teacher.

  • 5.

I thought that this was the time in my life to just focus on my children, but I was also driven to progress in my career once I started exploring the leadership side of academia.

  • 6.

My school was looking to fill a leadership role, which felt like a logical next step for me, so I decided to start Western Governors University's Master of Science in Educational Leadership program.

  • 7.

Once I complete my master’s program, I’ll be able to step into the head of school position at the school that I currently teach at!

Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

    Messages from Myself:

You could fail while pursuing your education again.

  • How I responded:

I was my biggest naysayer when it came to going back to school. I was very hesitant to go back to school for my master's degree because I was afraid I might fail after committing and telling my family and friends about it. However, after taking the leap and committing to pursuing my master's, everyone has been very supportive and I've felt great!

Experiences and challenges that shaped me

  • I tend to internalize the stress of work, school, and parenthood. It became too much at one point and I thought I couldn't do it anymore. A peer saw my distress and pointed out all my accomplishments. The support helped me realize I am capable!
