Life & Career Milestones

My path in life took a while to figure out

  • 1.

I graduated from a small rural town with 13 other students. Thus my educational experiences were somewhat limited.

  • 2.

I attended a large university with very little financial and academic assistance.

  • 3.

I married and divorced while completing my undergraduate degree. It was her that told me I would basically never make it as a school administrator.

  • 4.

I became the first in my family to graduate from college.

  • 5.

I had a fulfilling 10 years of teaching and coaching middle and high school students.

  • 6.

I spent 12 years in assistant and associate principal roles where I learned from some of the best mentors one could have.

  • 7.

I spent one year as the principal of a middle school where we earned an Exemplary rating from the Texas Education Agency for our test scores.

  • 8.

I am now proudly serving in my tenth year as the principal of the academic powerhouse, Lubbock High.

Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

    Messages from Family:

When talking with someone very close to me about my dreams and aspirations I was told I would never be a principal in a large high school.

  • How I responded:

I used this comment as a portion of the driving force to achieve exactly what I was told would not happen by this person. Those hurtful words became the motivation to prove that person wrong.

Experiences and challenges that shaped me

  • My parents attended one year of college and my older brother went to work before finishing college thus I did not have the benefit of others around me to help me navigate what was needed to become a successful college student. It was a struggle.
