My path in life took a while to figure out
1.
I served in the Navy for eleven years, from 1984 to 1995.
2.
I expected to stay in the Navy for many more years, but I unexpectedly developed asthma.
3.
I was placed TDRL and then released. I had no idea what I was going to do next.
4.
When I came home, I enrolled at LaGuardia CC and then NYU where I studied Communications.
5.
I worked in education for some time while I was advocating for myself and other vets.
6.
I knew law & politics were channels for change, so I started engaging local elected officials.
7.
I founded NY MetroVets and currently sit on several boards to help advocate for my fellow veterans.
8.
Last year, the mayor signed a veterans city agency into law; that is a huge legacy piece for me.
Defining Moments
How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Myself:
Am I doing the right thing?
How I responded:
I have a propensity to second-guess myself and my choices, which gets me angry. I have to step back and tell myself, "I'm gonna do this." Most of my negative noise has always come from myself because I've always known how to tune out negativity coming from others. But its hard. So once I overcome that little voice with my stronger voice, I'm able to make things happen and work for what I believe in and help others.
