Defining Moments
How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Myself:
You're really awkward; students won't respect you.
How I responded:
This is hard--I felt this way with my campers, I feel this way with some of the kids I tutor, even now. Sometimes I think the little voices in our own heads are the hardest to shake off. But what I realized is that they won't always go away. Instead of trying to quiet them, I acknowledge, "Okay, I'm awkward sometimes [even if some people don't think I am.] Okay, maybe my students won't respect me. Maybe I'm scared. But even though I feel this way, I'm just going to do what I need to do anyway."
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
I have Dyspraxia, which makes certain skills like note-taking and organization challenging. The most important skill is self-advocacy. People are understanding when I initiate honest and humble conversations about my needs, and stand up for them.
