Day In The Life Of A Mental Health Therapist

My Day to Day

I work one-on-one with kids in a group home setting, guiding them through their emotional challenges. My day involves 45-minute to one-hour therapy sessions, both individual and group-based. I get to help them process their feelings through talk therapy, meditation, and other methods, while also preparing them for their return home. The most rewarding part of my job is seeing the progress as they reintegrate into their families, continuing their healing process even after they leave.

Life & Career Milestones

My path in life took a while to figure out

  • 1.

    I earned my bachelor’s degree in social work from Mississippi College.

  • 2.

    After graduating, I felt like I needed to go into public policy, so I went back to school for a Master of Public Policy and Administration.

  • 3.

    I originally planned to work on Capitol Hill and change the world through education policy, but when the time came, I decided to slow down a bit and explore.

  • 4.

    I spent five years working in the nonprofit sector and ultimately realized that I wanted to go back into the counseling and social work field.

  • 5.

    I went back to school and got a second master’s degree in counseling.

  • 6.

    I found that I was most passionate about working with adolescents, which led me to my current role as a therapist for the Methodist Children’s Homes of Mississippi.

  • My father passed away when I was young. My mother immediately put me into grief counseling. To this day, I still think about my counselor. It inspired me to also want to help kids through counseling.
